Step1
One website per product or service
Getting started with a website is not as easy as it seems. When you’re in the process of building your website you must think of your target market. For example if you are selling shoes, what type of shoes do you specialize in? Who purchases those types of shoes? What age group or gender? What activities does your targeted market like to do online? All of these questions must be answered, before starting your website. Once you have this down your website marketing will be that much easier.
One you’ve figured out who you are marketing to, then think of a website name that correctly suits your product or service, but unique enough to set it apart from other websites. For instance if your shoe business is geared towards sneakers, most likely your website will have sneaker some where in the title of your website address. Also keep in mind that keywords are how potential clients search for your product or service. So your website name should have the keyword that will draw your client’s interest. Also keep in mind of uniqueness. In the sneaker business footlocker is your top competitor, so what sets you apart from them? Maybe you sell discounted sneakers, and your website name is discountedsneakers.com or cheapsneakers.com. This will allow your website to stay a top of the search engine, by using a key word that’s not so saturated that it will take big money ads to get to the top. Also be mindful that your keyword should be common enough so that people are searching for the keyword regularly, so try to find that balance between popular and unique.
Here are some tips on find your keyword or phrase that suits your business. First identify your service or product, give it a unique twist such as affordable, cheap, genuine, quality, est. and then do a search with your keyword or phrase on Google or yahoo. The top websites that come up should be reviewed in Alexa.com. If the site is in the top 500,000 ranking then is very popular thus your keyword or phrase are popular. If not those website are below 500,000 ranking find a more popular keyword or phrase.
Also remember to always gear your website to one keyword or phrase, because the search engine looks for how much content on your website has your keyword don’t confused the search engines buy selling to many different products and services. If you have 3 or more products or services you are selling create sub-domains for them and give them keyword or phrase focus. Give your meta tags, slogans, product descriptions est. your keyword or phrase as well. The more times you have a specific keyword or phrase on your site the stronger the possibility of your website being a top of the search engines for that keyword or phrase.
Step2
Get listed
When you’ve built a great website you now need to show it, and the best way to do that is to get listed in as many search engines and directories as possible. Google, Yahoo, the Yellow pages, est. gives you a way to list your website free of charge on their search engines. When your site is added to there search engine it allows people to search for products or services under your category by keywords. Also get listed in directories specific to your product or service. The search engine will associate your website with the directories that you are listed in. For example if you sell web design services you would list your website in a web design directory. Many of these directories are free, but require you to link back to their website in exchange for your listing. I would set a side a separate page for this, because your front page can get a little cluttered over time. Before being listed on a directory it is good practice to check out its popularity on Alexa.com to see how much traffic it generates daily. The better traffic on the directories that you are listed on, the more visibility and keyword search engine rankings for your website. This is very useful if you decide to pay for higher listings on a directory, because you want to maximize your money. If you pay to be number one on a site with a low Alexa.com ranking you are wasting your money!
There are also other factors that allow you to get a top the search engines as well. The search engines like Google look at how many times your website has been posted on other websites within the same category of your website. So you may want to do a link exchange with websites offering similar products or services. When you exchange links with fellow website owners, you may want to do it through web rings and forums geared towards your product or service. Web rings give you access to people who are doing the same thing you’re doing, and they’ll support you and your business in return. This will give you the greatest edge over any one who just lists their website in directories all day. Also look at the website’s Alexa.com ranking before linking to it. The higher it’s ranking the more prestige your website will get for being listed upon it for your genera of products or services. Again don’t waste your time or effort on exchanging links with a website with little to no traffic.
Step3
Right Articles, Reviews and Video
You can write helpful articles and reviews on blogs and article sites within the same genera of your website. When you give people valuable information they’ll tend to look for the source of it, thus giving your website more exposure. So go to sites like eHow.com, and Youtube.com or create your own blog on Blogger.com and share or RSS feed it within your social networks (facebook, twitter, myspace, est.) and e-mail. Search engines will list how many times your article and web link appears on the internet. You wouldn’t believe the quality of clients you will generate from this. It isn’t only how many clients you get, its how many clients that you retain. The successful business have repeat business from their past clients and referrals from their current clients, reserving ad money in the long run.
Also creating a How to Video on Youtube.com is very effective as well. In an age where people don’t like to read so much, video is very effective in giving people useful information, thus giving your business website more exposure. And remember to always use the same keywords of your website when posting your articles and video.
Step4
Give promotional incentives
The art in retaining clients is as simple as giving them something that they need as well as something that they will want but wasn’t expecting, thus giving them a pleasurable experience while visiting your website or purchasing your product or service. A great example is to give them a first time buyers discount on their next purchase, as well as a cash or free product or service incentive when they refer another person to your business. Whatever it is make it good enough that your client can’t refuse the offer allowing it to greatly improve the exposure of your business.
The most effective way in using your client as a tool for marketing is to introduce an affiliate program. Give your current clients an option to earn a percentage of the product or service profit when they refer someone to your website. This can be via, banner, link ads, TV, video, or radio commercials. Be creative in allowing your clients to advertise for you. This requires little effort on your part and lightens the advertising load on you and your staff.
Please take these tips seriously and I’ll see you on top!
